In Ukraine, Trump plot suspect remembered as a ‘delusional’ reject. Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old Hawaiian homebuilder, has been remembered as a “delusional” reject in Ukraine after his alleged involvement in a plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump.
Routh’s online persona showcased an inflated sense of self-importance, boasting about his efforts to recruit foreign fighters from Afghanistan to support Ukraine’s struggle against Russia. However, his claims were met with skepticism by Ukrainian military officials, who deemed his strategies as “delusional”.
He was previously arrested in 2002 for barricading himself in a local business with a machine gun and had faced multiple charges, including felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
Additionally, he had a history of financial difficulties, with judges ordering him to pay tens of thousands of dollars to plaintiffs in various civil lawsuits.
Despite his questionable past, Routh presented himself as a passionate supporter of Ukraine, even traveling to the country in April 2022 to show his solidarity.
However, those who encountered him in Ukraine described him as “excited” and “all over the place mentally”. His attempts to join the country’s International Legion were rejected, and he was advised to use official channels to recruit individuals to fight in Ukraine.
Routh’s online activities also raised eyebrows, as he donated to Democratic presidential hopefuls, expressed support for Trump in 2016, and later became disillusioned with the former president.
His Twitter posts showcased a mix of controversial opinions and grandiose statements, including advocating for civilian support in Ukraine and suggesting that Trump’s campaign motto should be “make Americans slaves again”.
The stark contrast between Routh’s online persona and his real-life actions has left many puzzled. His son, Oran, described him as a loving and responsible father, but others who interacted with him reported feeling uneasy and even intimidated.
As the investigation into the alleged assassination plot continues, Routh’s complex and concerning history has raised questions about the motivations behind his actions.
