No Jailbreak at Owerri Correctional Centre, Says Official
Owerri, April 12, 2025 – The management of the Owerri Correctional Centre has officially debunked reports of a jailbreak at the facility, reassuring the public that the situation is under control.
In a statement released by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on Thursday, the spokesperson confirmed that rumors about an alleged jailbreak were entirely false. The statement emphasized that all inmates remain securely in custody, and there was no breach of the centre’s security systems.
“This is to clarify that there has been no jailbreak at the Owerri Correctional Centre. The facility remains secure, and the lives of both inmates and staff are safe,” the statement read.
Rumors had quickly spread on social media, alarming residents of Owerri and the surrounding areas. The false reports suggested that a violent escape attempt had occurred, stirring panic. However, local authorities quickly assured the public that security protocols at the facility were intact, and there had been no such incident.
The Nigerian Correctional Service attributed the spread of false information to mischief-makers, urging the public to rely only on official sources for updates. The Imo State Government has also pledged to work closely with the NCS to further strengthen security measures at all correctional facilities in the state.
The Owerri Correctional Centre remains one of the most secure facilities in the region,
with continuous upgrades to its infrastructure and staff training to prevent such incidents.
