Abuja, Nigeria – Former Governor of Nasarawa State and prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has dismissed speculations of a rift between the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuring the public that the CPC faction remains firmly loyal to both the President and the ruling party.
Al-Makura, a key figure in the legacy CPC bloc that merged into the APC in 2013, made the statement while addressing journalists on Wednesday in Abuja. He emphasized that recent rumors of a potential defection or internal rebellion within the APC by former CPC members were unfounded and politically motivated.
“The CPC bloc is an integral part of the APC, and we remain committed to the ideals and vision of President Tinubu’s leadership. There is no disunity, no agitation, and certainly no plan to exit the party,” Al-Makura stated.
Dismissing Rumors of Factional Tensions
In recent weeks, political observers and analysts had speculated about growing dissatisfaction among legacy blocs within the APC, including the CPC, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and others, which originally merged to form the party in 2013.
The speculation intensified after a few high-profile political meetings involving former CPC allies, raising questions about the faction’s stance toward the current administration. However, Al-Makura insists these interpretations are overblown.
“Our meetings are aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and supporting the current administration, not plotting rebellion,” he explained. “Unity within the APC is paramount at this critical time in Nigeria’s political and economic development.”
Strong Support for Tinubu’s Leadership
Al-Makura lauded President Tinubu’s efforts in addressing national challenges, especially in economic reform, security, and federal appointments that reflect diversity and inclusivity. He urged members of the APC and the public to avoid falling for divisive narratives.
“Tinubu is a bridge-builder. The CPC bloc sees in him a leader who has continued to carry everyone along. We will not be distracted by those who benefit from sowing seeds of discord,” he added.
